Math Rider Homeschool Review Pin Image
Learning to recall math facts quickly is one of the skills that I really want all of my children to learn! Being able to quickly recall even simple math facts can go a long way in helping them to better understand and become faster with harder math concepts. Our family was recently able to try out and review Math Rider, which can help your children to do just that!
Math Rider

What Is Math Rider?

Math Rider is a game geared towards children ages 7 to 12, especially those that are interested in horses! The game helps your child to master their math facts (addition, subtractions, multiplication, and division). The program can be used on either Windows PC or Mac computers. At the time of this review, it is not available on tablets or other devices.

Your child plays the part of a horseback rider working their way through different lands, completing quests as they go. When your child enters a question, their horse and rider will start at the left-hand side of the screen. Coming from the right, towards the rider, will be hurdles (or jumps) with math questions. Your child will need to type in the correct answer and hit enter. As they answer the questions correctly, their rider will clear the hurdles and advance to the next one until they reach the end. The faster they can answer the math facts correctly, the faster their rider will move through the hurdles. If they are having trouble, their rider will slow down with them. As they advance through the game and its storyline, your child can earn new music tracks and prizes, such as castles, flags, flowers, and more.

How We Used It and What We Thought

The program was the best fit for my 11-year-old daughter, and so I had her work through the program, starting with the addition facts. She enjoyed the horse riding theme and was able to easily figure out how the program worked. Of course, like many children, she wasn’t a fan that it was “math work”, but at least it made it more fun than just repeating math facts on a stark white sheet of paper!

I made a profile for myself as well so that I could jump around a bit more and try out the different operations besides just the addition that my daughter was working on. I rather enjoyed trying to solve the facts as fast as possible! The graphics might not be flashy and loud like kids are used to these days with modern games, but the “old school” graphics and peaceful music bring back a little bit of nostalgia for me. It’s nice to have something simple and calm for a change. I’m definitely a fan!

Final Thoughts

I think this program works well in helping children to master their math facts and would make a nice addition to your homeschool curriculum. The price point seems a tad on the high side for what it is, but if you get the lifetime membership (currently $47 at the time of this post), you have access to free software updates for life. Each purchase allows you to install the program on up to 3 different computers within the same family, and you can have up to 6 player profiles on a single installation. If you have a large family that could benefit from working on their math facts, the lifetime membership is definitely worth it in my eyes.
